Travel League (BAYS)

Milton Travel Soccer participates in the Boston Area Youth Soccer (BAYS) League. The BAYS League is comprised of over 1,500 teams from more than 50 towns in eastern Massachusetts. The level of competitive play in BAYS is generally higher than in-town soccer programs but is not considered as competitive as Club soccer (which would would be equivalent to AAU in other sports. Most travel team coaches are former players and the majority have passed coach certification courses. BAYS games are also officiated by registered referees according to FIFA rules. U10 and below teams play a 6 v 6 format, U11 and U12 teams play a 8 v 8 format and U14 and above teams play a 11 v 11 format.

The travel program is comprised of approximately 25 teams (both boys and girls) from 8 to 18 years of age. For children under 8, Milton Travel Soccer hosts an "in-town" Youth Development League (YDL) that plays on Sunday afternoons. Please see Youth Development Program for information on the YDL.

Milton Travel Soccer also wants to make sure coaches have the necessary support and resources to offer age and skill level appropriate coaching. We therefore provide coaching clinics and support coaches in obtaining coach certifications with full reimbursement for classes and license fees. Milton Travel Soccer normally schedules the first two certificate courses (a "G" and "F") in town in the fall and spring of each year (subject to enrollment minimums).

Because even the best soccer player can benefit from professional instruction, Milton Travel Soccer provides professionally-run, age-appropriate skills clinics to all players free of charge for all registered travel players. The clinics provide an opportunity to learn new skills and to receive individual instruction from trained, experienced instructors. Please see Skills Clinics for information on clinics and our current coaching/training partner Paul Turner's Ultimate Soccer Academy.

Travel soccer can be competitive. However, in Milton, we don't level our players until 11 years old. So for U-9 and U-10 teams, your son/daughter will be placed on a team. That team is placed in one of four divisions (each with sub-divisions) by the BAYS League according to ability (generally prior season performance or, in the case of a new team, in a lower division). As players grow and progress, their team, if successful, will move up in the divisions. If not, they will stay at the same level. So the competition is level and all players receive equal playing time. It's about fundamentals!

Starting with U11, players are evaluated and leveled each spring for the following year. Evaluation sessions are conducted by our current coaching/training partner. Teams are "leveled" according to evaluations and coaches' inputs. Please see Travel Placement Policies for more information.

Fees

$125 registration includes administration costs, field usage charges by town Parks & Recreation program, 10 games per season, skills clinics, referee costs, team and field equipment, insurance coverage and registration with MYSA.

All first time U14 and younger travel players must purchase a uniform shirt, shorts and socks. For continuing Travel players a new shirt, shorts or socks are only required if necessary to replace outgrown, lost or worn equipment. Travel uniforms are high quality and typically last 2-3 seasons.

Registration

The registration deadline for the Spring 2010 season is January 9, 2010.

For additional information and to register on-line please see Travel Registration.

Season

The travel league plays a 10 week fall season beginning usually the first Saturday after Labor Day, as well as, a 10 week Spring Season beginning the second Saturday in April. For the 14 year old and under teams, games are played on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. For 16 and 18 year old teams, there is a spring season only with all games played on Sunday afternoons (it is assumed that high school age players participate in high school programs during the fall).

Each season, five of the games are played away and five are home games which are played in Milton. Home games are usually at Milton Health Care (sometimes called Flatley), Brooks Field (at Milton High School), Massasoit Community College (in Canton just off of Rt. 138), Houghton's Pond or at Andrews Field (East Milton). Travel is generally no more than 40 minutes in the worst case (Attleboro or Sherborne Dover for example). In many cases, it's close - Dorchester, Randolph and Canton.
